The St. Brigid Cross is named for Saint Brigid (Mary of the Gael) born in the mid 5th century. The legend goes that before her fathers death Brigid sat by him in prayer, whiling away the time by weaving the first Saint Brigid cross from the rushes strewn about the floor.
