Saint Columba Medal
This medal depicts St. Columba, known in Gaelic as Colum Cille, meaning "Dove of the Church." The front scene shows Columba with his crozier alongside a heron, recalling an allegorical legend of his exile from Ireland to the Scottish Isle of Iona in 563 AD. A dove overhead completes the composition. The cross on the reverse is shaped after a stone referred to as St. Columba's Pillow. Carved on both sides.
St. Columba founded monasteries at Durrow, Derry, Kells, and Swords in Ireland and used his monastery on Iona as a base for converting the pagan Picts to Christianity. Measures 1 1/4" x 3/4" (32mm x 19mm).
